The rosary is a meditative, scriptural journey through the life of Christ,
walked hand-in-hand with Our Blessed Mother. While it may seem complex at first glance, its structure is a simple, rhythmic cycle designed to move from your fingertips to your heart.
Hold the crucifix of your rosary to begin.
1. The Sign of the Cross: With your right hand, trace the cross from your forehead to your breastbone, then to your left and right shoulders, praying: "In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen."
2. The Apostles' Creed: Still holding the crucifix, recite the Creed to anchor your faith: "I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth..."
3. The Our Father: On the first large bead directly above the crucifix, pray: "Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name..."
4. Three Hail Marys: On the next three small beads, pray three Hail Marys. These are traditionally offered for an increase in the virtues of Faith, Hope, and Charity.
5. The Glory Be: Conclude the introductory section on the space before the next large bead by praying: "Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit..."
A standard rosary consists of five groups of ten small beads, known as decades. For each decade, you will announce a specific Gospel scene (a Mystery) to contemplate while you pray.
Step 1: Announce the Mystery: Name the mystery for that decade (for example: "The First Joyful Mystery, The Annunciation"), and take a brief moment to picture the scene in your mind.
Step 2: The Our Father: On the single large bead before the decade, pray one Our Father.
Step 3: Ten Hail Marys: On the ten small beads of the decade, pray one Hail Mary on each bead while quietly meditating on the mystery.
Step 4: The Glory Be: At the end of the ten beads, pray one Glory Be.
Step 5: The Fatima Prayer: Following the Glory Be, it is traditional to add the request made by Mary at Fatima: "O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell; lead all souls to Heaven, especially those who have most need of your mercy."
Repeat this exact four-step cycle for the Second, Third, Fourth, and Fifth Decades.
Once you have completed all five decades, your fingers will arrive back at the centerpiece medal.
1. The Hail, Holy Queen: Pray this beautiful prayer of entrustment to our Mother: "Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope..."
2. Concluding Rosary Prayer: Pray the final blessing: "O God, whose only begotten Son, by His life, death, and resurrection, has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life..."
3. The Sign of the Cross: Conclude your prayer time exactly as you began, with a reverent Sign of the Cross.
To help guide your daily contemplation, the Church assigns specific mysteries to different days of the week:
The Joyful Mysteries (Monday & Saturday): Focus on the early life and incarnation of Jesus, from the Annunciation to His finding in the Temple.
The Sorrowful Mysteries (Tuesday & Friday): Follow Christ through His passion, crucifixion, and ultimate sacrifice on the Cross.
The Glorious Mysteries (Wednesday & Sunday): Meditate on the victory of the Resurrection, the Ascension, and the glory of Heaven.
The Luminous Mysteries (Thursday): Contemplate the public ministry of Jesus, including His Baptism and the Institution of the Eucharist.
